This seems like a very simple topic, but I have been surprised as I have been helping others with their Social Media how many don’t know they can do this or even why they should!

For example, maybe you want to update your status with something that you don’t want EVERYONE who is your friend on Facebook to read.

This might be when you want to just announce something to your clients or team about your product or business and don’t want to be constantly bombarding your friends and family with what you are doing.

For example, here’s some lists I have created:

  • Family
  • School Friends
  • Local Friends
  • Church Friends
  • Business Team
  • Networking Friends
  • Mentoring Friends (Friends who I learn lots from their post)

and many more!  You can create any kind of list.

Now, say I want to make a status update about a Team Dinner that we are having but I don’t necessarily want to have every friend on Facebook read it. Then I can create the status update and then exclude some of these lists.

Let me walk you though the process.

How to Create New List

  1. Click on “Account” in upper right hand side of your FB page.  Now select “Edit Friends” from the drop down menu.
  2. Now select “Create New List” at the top of the screen
  3. Enter a name for your list
  4. Select which FB friends you want in this list and click the blue “create list” button

Now if you have a ton of FB friends already, it might take you a while to sort through all of them, but do a little bit everyday and you will realize down the road, what a great tool this is.

How to Update Status and Exclude a List

  1. Type in a Status Update on your Profile Page
  2. Click on the little black “Lock” icon in the bottom right of your status bar.
  3. Select “Custom” from the drop down menu
  4. Now start typing the name of the list you want to exclude in the “Hide this from these people” box.

You can also do the opposite with a certain post and share the post with “Everyone” or “Friends of Friends” so more people could see a post!

This is a really handy tool if used with the right intentions and without wanting to bombard or spam others!

Here’s another great tip!  When you click on your “Home” page, now your lists are on the left hand side of your page and if you click on a List, you can just see that lists’ status updates! It sorts them for you.  So if I want to just see what’s going on with my family, now I can read all their status updates fast!

This past Wednesday, I had the opportunity to interview Donna Valdes for the second time on a weekly Internet Radio Show I co-host, The Real Wahms (for Work at Home Moms).

An interesting topic came up of why women feel so much guilt when they don’t get “it all done” and men don’t.

It’s kind of crazy to think that 80-90% of the organizations in the home business industry are made up of women, yet most of the top income earners are men! Why is that?  Is it that they are better than us?  Do they have better skills?  Are they better at overcoming challenges and excuses?

In some ways, I think that they do have a leg up on us WAHMs because they are not hard on themselves like so many of us are.

I remember several years back at the beginning of my journey in this industry, I became friends with a couple others associates (who were not financially linked to me) but we all were at the same level in our income and rank in our company.  There were 3 of us and we all agreed at a company event that we were just going to GO FOR IT and take our businesses to the next level.

So my personality is the type that will commit myself to things without even thinking what it might entail or the skill-set required.  YES…my EGO gets in the way for me many times as I always think I CAN DO ANYTHING!

Well, at the time, my 3 boys were a lot younger, 7, 5 and 3 and my husband was working part of the week out of town and it was also SUMMER.  So not even looking at what it was going to take to increase my income, I just threw my hand into the circle and give them a big high-5 and said, “let’s do it!”

After I returned home, reality set in.  I just honestly didn’t have the time, nor even the skill-set required to reach that next income level.  And I really had no desire to sacrifice the time away from kids at that point–time with them has always been so precious and fast-moving.

So all the sudden I find that I’m making up excuses for myself and to others and starting to feel so defeated. The self talk in my head started to rear its ugly head with things like, “you’re not good enough,”  “you’re not worthy,” “you aren’t a polished speaker” and on and on.

It was compounded a few months later when we came together at a local event and I was standing along the side of the audience (with many of my team members in the room) and one of the persons that took the challenge with me, (from the front of the room) basically called me out and said “what rank are you at now, Kimber?” (which we all knew I hadn’t advanced at all while he had grown and advanced quickly)!

I remember leaving just devastated and to make matters worse the other mom who joined us in the challenge had also reached all kinds of new levels in her income and rank.

So poor me. WAH!!!!

(Now I have to say that at no time did I not feel happy for them…I’ve always been one that has celebrated others success and not feel jealousy for others)…but at the same time, I was not happy for me, self doubt continued to plague me and the shame of not making it with them set in hard!

It wasn’t until a while later that I was smacked at the side of the head when I realized (with some intense coaching) that I sabotaged myself by comparing myself to them and their journey.

I was a mom of 3 young boys, with my husband gone and very little time to get out and really work my business.

The gentleman was able to ramp up his traveling schedule and go out and do all kinds of meetings for his team, and he did have great communication and presentation skills that I hadn’t acquired and he was very gifted at getting others excited even to this day.

The other mom was able to have her husband home with her to help with her kids while she and a business partner went on a crazy “home party” and traveling schedule for some time which created all kinds of success for her!

I’m not trying to make excuses for myself but what I am trying to get at, is that it was their time to be able to focus on their business. God had given them the doors to be able to do what they did and they totally deserved all the success they gained.

When I looked back and realized that from the time I started my home business, I had always made it a priority that I would work a very part-time schedule and be home for my kids and not work full time, I realized that I starting taking on their goals (out of my EGO) instead of setting realistic goals for what was best for me and my family’s schedule and lives.

How silly is that?

When we set NEW goals, make sure that they are big enough to get you into action but not so huge that its something that realistically you can do (because of time, financial or other “real” limitations). It’s important to have BIG DREAMS but along the way, you want to set realistic mini-goals for steady upward progression.

So when you go to your company’s next event, don’t compare yourself with others on the stage! They might have a different schedule or priority than you do right now.  They might also be in a different season when they are harvesting from all that they planted.  They might have also increased a skill set that you are still trying to master.

Don’t look around and feel bad...celebrate their success and know that if you are honestly being a good steward of the time you are working your business, God will promote you when you and He are ready!

Embrace the season you are in.  It might be a planting season!  It might be a season of increasing skillset right now…and be open when you are in the Harvest Season!   It’s coming soon!  I promise!

There’s a couple great new plug ins that I have been using that are fun and easy!

The first is called, “Simple Facebook Like.”

What does this plug in do?

When you create a new post on Wordpress, it attaches a little Facebook “Like” button (at top or bottom or both) of your post. So when your readers LIKE what they read, they simply click on the button and then it shows that they liked your post on their Facebook profile page.

Try it out!  Go ahead!

Simply click on the Like button at the top of this post and then go check out what it posts on your Facebook profile page.

It’s pretty cool, huh!

The next plug in is called “Sexy Bookmarks” and you can see this at the bottom of this post.

Anyway, you can choose from a couple different phrases, such as “Share the Love,” “Share the Wisdom,” etc.

When your reader clicks on this tool, they can share to a ton of their social media sites they use!

In the midst of trying times so many people are working so hard or just simply looking for work so they can survive.  But the key that most millionaires possess is attaining a debt free lifestyle.

When you are debt free you can choose how much income you want to make. You can control how much time you want to work.  Being debt free opens up many options for people who spent most of their life struggling.

There is a saying, “it’s not how much you make, but how much you keep!”

I have watched many people increase their income but at the same time, they increase their spending (I have many times fallen into this trap too).

But not only am I, as a Team Leader, passionate about helping others create income but I also want to see all my business partners debt free too.

Once you are debt free you can make choices that you would never be able to do before.

Currently our family is working towards being debt free.  We have no credit card debt but still have our rental property and home mortgage we are working on.

This is our #1 goal so we can then turn around and help others even more than we have been able to do!

There are many great programs and coaches out there to help you get out of debt.  2 of my favorites are Dave Ramsey and Dani Johnson’s War on Debt.

Another thing we are very passionate about no matter how much we make is giving back 10%. This is NOT only a biblical principle but also many business savvy people (who you wouldn’t think spiritually inclined) practice this as well.

There are so many worthy causes out there that help feed and clothe and provide medical services to the poor. As a family, find an organization you can all get behind and support them!

This is a great principle to be teaching your kids.

You see… There is a LAW called “reaping and sowing.” The metaphysical thinkers may call it “karma” but whatever its called, its a REAL law (I believe from God) that says, whatever you are giving towards will give back.

This principle works in giving financially as well as in words, actions and deeds.

What do you want more out of today in your life or business?

More referrals from others?

Then give others referrals!

So many want MORE but are not willing to give!

SOW INTO THE DIRECTION YOU WANT TO HAVE MORE OF!

Do you want more support or encouragement from a spouse?

Then GIVE more encouragement or support towards them!

What’s all the hype about Skype? Hey…that rhymes!

Most people were introduced to Skype by watching an episode of Oprah and seeing people chime in by Skype Webcam from all over the country on her TV show.

So instantly, when others hear the word Skype now, they think they need to either use Skype with as a webcam or use it to make phone calls.

Although these are both great ways to use Skype…

another useful way to use Skype that is overlooked, is the ability to “instant chat” with others online.

Many are familiar with the concept of online chat because of FaceBook.

On Facebook, you can turn on your chat, in the bottom right hand side of your screen and you can chat in real time with one of your FaceBook Friends.

Skype can do that too but what’s so great about Skype taking it a step further is that you can create “group chats.”

So for example, if you are in business and you need to keep in connection with several team members or if you have a group of friends that are separated by long distance…you can set up a “group chat” and you can have a “party” online (or a online business chat for you professionals out there).

You don’t need a webcam…You are TYPING back and forth to each other.

This is a great way to keep in contact in real-time with people.

I was again reminded about the value of Skype this week as I am working closely with a group of 5 other business partners on a company incentive to win a VIP trip to New York.

All of us are in different locations/states and we were sending endless emails between each other (copying everyone into them) and I know all of our inbox’s were getting backed up.

Group Chat on Skype

So by creating a group chat on Skype for this team, in an instant, we had a real time group chat to quickly ask questions, share ideas, encourage each other, get some direction or advice, etc….

Many times, I don’t have time to pick up the phone and get into a lengthy discussion but if I can quickly “skype” someone from my desk (multitasking) this saves me a lot of time.

Now those other things that Skype can do, like webcam connecting, making phone calls are really quite cool and can connect people all over the world but don’t forget the basics of Skype as an “instant chat”  tool as well.

It was truly a powerful and “REAL” show today.  There were some almost uncomfortable things Donna shared about this industry that sometimes get swept under the rug because we don’t want to talk about them. But by Donna sharing these things, it might just help some of our listeners handle these things long before they may or may not happen in their own journey.

Shortly after the show, I thought about how Donna was introduced to this industry and how she was very business-minded about it.

Donna was immediately attracted to the lifestyle of what this industry provided.   She wanted a change for her family and to put her kids first and not at the mercy of her boss.

She understood right away how she could leverage other people to help her and them get to their goals too.

It really made me think because Donna shared that she was introduced to the industry by a company that had a product that necessarily wasn’t optimal for her and didn’t produce results that were life-altering.

But she still caught the vision of the business part and shared other people’s stories (that had positive results with her product).

That was not so for me.  I was introduced to this industry by becoming a product customer and I had NO intentions to do this business.  In fact, I HATED it!

So for me, if I had not had a positive product experience, I would have NEVER done this business. I didn’t catch the vision of residual income.

After the show, I realized just how lucky I was that didn’t miss the boat of this industry because I wasn’t as in tune as Donna was with the income opportunity.

I have always kind of believed that to be successful in the industry, you had to have an incredible story of the products to have success.  But Donna proved otherwise.

Now don’t get me wrong.  I still believe you need to be a “product of your product” but if your results are HUGE or you aren’t where you want to be with them yet, then there still is a way to succeed.

She still had a belief in her product, not because of her story but because she still saw the benefits it could offer others. So she could still get passionate and help others create income!

There are many within my own company that are hesitant to share some of our systems because they deal with “weight loss” and if they didn’t have to lose weight or haven’t exactly arrived at the results they are looking for yet, then they think they can’t share it.

THIS IS NOT TRUE!  Share your clients stories!

It’s not JUST about YOU! It’s about what your product or service can do that benefits others.

I know some of you might be like Donna that got introduced to this industry through a company that might not have had a life-changing result in your life.

But its okay!  Share others stories!   That’s what Donna did and it worked!

You were planted where you are for a reason and maybe just a season, but you can truly “prosper where you are planted” if others in your company have created results.

There’s a reason you are there and it might be about who you will meet or what you have to learn there.

The point is… embrace right where you are at and GO FOR IT!

Yesterday, Jodi and I had the honor of interviewing our Success Coach, Dani Johnson on TRW. Dani shared with our listeners how “people are NOT duplicat-able but SYSTEMS are.”

I learned this first hand early on in my home business. After some initial success, I turned to the internet and started “social networking” (before it was even called that).

I was able to expand my business and connections very naturally through mom boards and forums because I had developed a certain skill-set that just worked for me.

The problem was that NO one else on my team could duplicate me or what I was doing and I really didn’t have the skill-set yet to help them succeed in the way they needed to or was gifted.

It wasn’t until I let go of my ego and decided to get some help for my team and find a “system” that they could plug into that was simple and help me release some of the burden I was feeling as a leader for their success or failure, that I really broke through that next level in my income.

I finally realized that in this industry, everyone comes to their business with different levels of skill-set, gifts, personalities, etc. And many times, they also come with “baggage” or “excuses” (well-planned lies) that is holding them back. I had to recognize that I was not really equipped to help move them quickly through all this and many times, it really wasn’t my place to do that anyway.

That’s where finding a Coach came in for my team!

In just 8 weeks, after plugging 10 leaders into First Steps to Success System, my income went from mid-4 digit monthly checks to 5 digit monthly checks and 6 figures that same year.

In the same time, my schedule went down to 20 hours per week or less.

One of the key reasons for this is that I went back to do what I had done initially at the first of my business and started to help NEW Associates get started.

You see, I had stopped doing this and had started “managing” others and trying to get them through their “stuff” and “hovering” over them like a “Mother Hen” waiting for them to do something–anything. And many of them just didn’t want to and like I said, I was not really equipped to get them there anyway.

When we start someone new in our business, our ONLY job is to “DIRECT and ENCOURAGE” them…it is up to them to increase their skill set and also go through self-development that they need to create success.

So you DIRECT them to your SYSTEM and simply ENCOURAGE them through it.

It’s so important that if you are just getting started and your team or company already has a SYSTEM, then don’t be like me and try to “reinvent the wheel” or think you can do it better…just follow the SYSTEM and then DIRECT and ENCOURAGE others through the same process.

If you keep it this simple and keep doing this over and over, soon you will be generating an income that you won’t believe.

Now…you are saying, what does the Boys Scouts have to do with all this.

Well guess what? Every successful organization has a SYSTEM whether it be the NBA Draft to McDonald’s. They have simple processes they direct and encourage their employees or players through to help them succeed.

So after our TRW show yesterday, Jodi, her hubby and our friend Angela went out to celebrate a little Cinco De Mayo for lunch.

In the car ride over, Angela was talking about preparing for a “Circle of Light” recognition for one of her Boy Scouts as she is a Leader.

I shared with Angela that I have 3 sons and I really know the value of the Boy Scouts program and think its really good for them but so many times we are so busy with other sports or activities that I feel overwhelmed with the program and have felt like I’ve really dropped the ball with Boy Scouts.

Angela says, “Kimber, all you need to do is get them there and then their leaders will do the rest!”

Being the control-freak (Ruby–if you are familiar with Dani’s Personality Gems), I thought their success or failure in the Boys Scouts was all up to me! Again, I was trying to do it all instead of just putting them into the highly successful “System” of Boy Scouts and their awesome leaders!

I said, “you mean all I need to do is use their SYSTEM”… we all just laughed as we had just heard Dani say that LOUDLY and thought how funny that it even applied to Boy Scouts!

(Jodi was just laughing at me as usual as she enjoys watching “Rubies” struggle)

Well that was another lesson for me that there are systems out there in every part of our lives that are already working that can help all of us out in not only for our business but also to help our families create success and balance too!
