Archive for the ‘Random (sometimes pointless thoughts and things)’ Category

This seems like a very simple topic, but I have been surprised as I have been helping others with their Social Media how many don’t know they can do this or even why they should!

For example, maybe you want to update your status with something that you don’t want EVERYONE who is your friend on Facebook to read.

This might be when you want to just announce something to your clients or team about your product or business and don’t want to be constantly bombarding your friends and family with what you are doing.

For example, here’s some lists I have created:

  • Family
  • School Friends
  • Local Friends
  • Church Friends
  • Business Team
  • Networking Friends
  • Mentoring Friends (Friends who I learn lots from their post)

and many more!  You can create any kind of list.

Now, say I want to make a status update about a Team Dinner that we are having but I don’t necessarily want to have every friend on Facebook read it. Then I can create the status update and then exclude some of these lists.

Let me walk you though the process.

How to Create New List

  1. Click on “Account” in upper right hand side of your FB page.  Now select “Edit Friends” from the drop down menu.
  2. Now select “Create New List” at the top of the screen
  3. Enter a name for your list
  4. Select which FB friends you want in this list and click the blue “create list” button

Now if you have a ton of FB friends already, it might take you a while to sort through all of them, but do a little bit everyday and you will realize down the road, what a great tool this is.

How to Update Status and Exclude a List

  1. Type in a Status Update on your Profile Page
  2. Click on the little black “Lock” icon in the bottom right of your status bar.
  3. Select “Custom” from the drop down menu
  4. Now start typing the name of the list you want to exclude in the “Hide this from these people” box.

You can also do the opposite with a certain post and share the post with “Everyone” or “Friends of Friends” so more people could see a post!

This is a really handy tool if used with the right intentions and without wanting to bombard or spam others!

Here’s another great tip!  When you click on your “Home” page, now your lists are on the left hand side of your page and if you click on a List, you can just see that lists’ status updates! It sorts them for you.  So if I want to just see what’s going on with my family, now I can read all their status updates fast!

Try it out today and let me know how you like it and also what types of creative “lists” you have made.  Just drop me a note below!

So, everyday I use healthy products that help to rebuild and restore my body, hopefully so I can stay YOUNG forever!

Now that I am in my 40’s, nutrition, skincare, exercise is increasingly become important to me.

Dang!  I’m no longer a girl that can just eat, drink and be merry without the consequences.

About 8 years ago, I was introduced to a line of “nutritional cleansing” products that I frankly thought was a scam.  This was the era of the whole “fen fen” scare and rapid weight loss gimmiks and even risky weight loss diets.

So I had heard some crazy stories of quick weight loss as a side benefit of removing toxins from the body, but I thought it had to be all water weight,  a quick fix, etc….and I was highly skeptical.

But I won’t lie, I had been trying to get rid of those last 5-10 “sticky” pounds for a long time after my 3rd son was born. With my two first sons, I easily bounced back to my pre-pregnancy weight.  But after my last one, I just found it a little bit harder.

Now many thought I was crazy because “in clothes” I looked as good as I had ever looked.  But ladies, you know how you feel under those clothes sometimes and the thought of actually putting on a bikini is alarming—that’s where I was…no hiding anything in a bikini!

So I decided to try the Cleansing System, not expecting AT ALL what would happen.

In my first 9 days, I released 10 lbs., 11 inches and 2% Body Fat. Now I had been doing the “Body for Life” program and going to spin or the gym 3 to 4 times per week with NO BUDGE before that.

So it was totally the JUMP START I needed not only physically, but mentally and emotionally too.

You see for the first time in my life, I do believe I started to battle depression. After 9/11, I started feeling so hopeless and scared and it really affected me to a deeper level that I can’t even explain to you.  It was almost as if I lived near Ground Zero or had someone personally affected. I didn’t but I felt like I couldn’t do anything and went into really an irrational fear about my kid’s future and I just couldn’t understand how other people could just move on and start laughing again and going on with their lives when over 3000 were just wiped out in an instant.

So for the first time in my life, I began eating not so healthy things and drinking SODA (which I had really never done in the past).

I think that although I was trying to counteract it all with going to the gym, my bad eating habits and slight depression was winning–my mind was just not at all in a good place.  I wanted to make a difference somehow but I didn’t know how and I felt worthless and hopeless.

So after I was introduced to this system and got those results I mentioned above, along with feeling 18 again energy wise, some small health challenges were gone, I felt alive and excited-–I knew that God had brought me a vehicle that I could get involved in to help others who felt like me–hopeless and discouraged and just basically getting by and living a life of mediocrity.

Over the past 8 years, I have been able to help coach 100s of others to reach their ideal health, weight and even life goals!

What a blessing was in that little brown box I found on my doorstep 8 years ago!  Who knew that little box could hold such treasures!

Anyway, the idea of “cleansing” has now gained attention by the media, health professionals, athletes and celebrities after we introduced this system to others.

But this is not like the “cleanses” out there (if you want to know why or how….too much to post, you’ll have to get hold of me).

But the idea of cleansing your body is similar to the reason you go and have your oil changed in your car or you change the filters in your vacuum or heating system.

Toxins and “stuff” clogs the pipes and you need to cleanse it out every now and then.

What would happen if you didn’t get an oil change?  What would happen if you never brushed your teeth?  What would happen if you never changed the bag in your vacuum?

Catch the drift!

Now here’s the confession, I haven’t had my full “oil change” since early October. I have been so busy coaching others, doing life, cranking up my business…that I kind of put myself on the “back burner” again.

I do take these healthy products everyday for maintenance but it’s time for a full overhaul again.

So I’m on Day 1 of my 9 day system and I want to be transparent in all this.

So I’m going to update this Post during my 9 days, so if you want to follow me, just check back here.  I’m going to be as honest as I can during the journey, since it’s been a while.

It’s good for the coach to get back to the basics sometimes too so they can relate to the rest of the players!

And I may even need some encouragement along the way too, so I would love some replies below!  I thank you in advance for that.

If anyone wants to join me in the next 9 days, please let me know or if you want to get started in the near future, I’d love to help you!

DAY 1

9am – I started my day with a yummy “healthy dark chocolate” (that makes me feel like I’m cheating).  I just had my first cleanse drink (4 oz) with 8 oz. of water.  I also had a “scooby snack” (that’s what I call them).  I’m feeling way excited as I know that in the morning, I am going to have that lean and clean feeling all over again!

I weighed myself and yes…I have some “sticky” pounds to release again!  Dang!  Summer and life’s busy adventures have taken its toll on me too!  I can’t wait to feel a little more “bikini ready” as the summer is almost gone!

12Noon – I just had my 2nd cleanse drink and also a bite of Healthy chocolate.  Time is going by fast today and so far so good… my hubby called and wanted to do dinner and a movie tonight though, so movie YES–but no buttered popcorn — dang!  LOL

Recently my family took a trip to the beautiful red rock country of Moab, Utah.  If you have never been there or never even heard of it, you are missing out!

Moab is the home of “Arches National Park” and “CanyonLands.” Many of you have seen it’s beautiful landscape and arches on postcards, movie backdrops (remember Tom Cruise hanging from that cliff taking his next assignment)?

Anyway, you really need to add it to your “bucket list” as a must see once in your lifetime!

People come from all over the world and it was fun seeing how many tourists have invaded that small town (even in a down economy).

Some of our favorites places are:

  • Slick Rock Cafe – for good food & music and make sure to ask for Lynell
  • “Naked Hippy Falls” – we just found this treasure and we’ve been there many times.  It’s a short hike to an amazing pool and waterfall!
  • Arches – “Delicate Arch” is the most famous and breathtaking!
  • Slick Rock Bike Trail – one of the most famous biking trails in the world!
  • Negro Bill’s Canyon – beautiful hike through shade and steep canyons!
  • “Boy Heaven” – that’s what we call it.  It’s a giant hill of red sand that the boys just slide down (many take sleds).

There’s just so much to do there.  We didn’t even have a chance to do all the “touristy” types of activities like rafting, jeep tours, etc. (we are more of a do it ourselves type of family) but if you like tours…there’s tons available.

Anyway, we have hiked Delicate Arch 3-4 times.  The last time we hiked it was when our kids were a lot younger, 6, 4 and 2.

The hike there is probably about 2 1/2 miles uphill over some groomed trails but mainly up steep red rock. There is very little shade and no water.   What you pack in to drink is all you have.

If you are going to do it, leave early in the morning (especially in the summer months).  By 9am, we were already feeling the heat.

The first time we hiked it with the kids, near the top it gets very narrow and you are up against cliff on one side and some pretty dramatic drops on the other.  We laughed as we remember how that time, we put a rope around Walker’s waist (only 2 at the time). This time, he was better aware of his surroundings and not so anxious to run around the hillside like he did as a toddler.

Anyway…it’s still a very long hike for younger kids.  2 of my sons, took off ahead of us (we call them the “goats)…they are just built to climb.

Walker, Stew and I just made our way up.  Walker was getting pretty worn out and I had been trying to keep him positively motivated on the way up (we played some counting games, sang some songs, etc.)   But he had just about had it.

I was a little winded myself but I knew what lied ahead and it’s so beautiful, I knew a little hard work was worth it.

As we were just at the top of another large hill, there was just a tiny bit of shade, so we all took a rest.

A couple passed us coming back from the arch and said to us, “You’re just 3 minutes away and it’s absolutely beautiful!”

That was it!

Walker was motivated again and surprisingly, so was I.  Even though I knew it wasn’t far, the fact that they were encouraging me (and especially my son) was so great!

I thought how so many times in life and in our business, we are so close to the beautiful “ARCH” just around the corner but just can’t see it or how far we have come until someone gives us a little encouragement.

Sometimes others can see how close we are as we are still blinded by all the obstacles and challenges before us.

I was so appreciative of those encouraging words that on our way back, I said to Walker, “okay…now look…here’s some other kids about your age that look tired and so let’s tell them how close they are and how worth it is to get to the top.”

So he started encouraging others on our way back.  What a great kid!

How often do we encourage others in our lives, our businesses, our team?

Can you see greatness in someone else that they can’t see themselves?  Can you see how far they have come when they can’t?

This week, I challenge you to tell someone that they are “only just 3 minutes away!”

Let me know what happens or if someone has ever encouraged you or helped you make it to the top of something you were trying to reach!

I’d love to hear your comments!

So I have never been one to “text and drive.”

One of the reasons is that for the last few years, I have had a $35 Walmart Nokia phone without much texting capabilities and I also realize that it’s not really the smartest or safest thing to do.

However, about 2 weeks ago, for some reason I was totally overcome with the need to get a message back to one of my team leaders quickly while I was driving my grandma’s car to my son’s ballgame.

My grandma was in the passenger seat and my father in the back seat.  I had been teasing him earlier about his terrible driving and how my grandma decided that I would do a better job.

So while I was driving, I received a text from a team member and as I was turning a corner, I hurry and sent a quick text back.

Well, my blood pressure skyrocketed as suddenly behind me I saw those dreaded red and blue lights escorting me to the side of the road.

In a panic now, my grandma grabbed my phone (gotta love her) and as the Officer approached and asked for the “docs,” I just knew I was busted for texting because I knew I wasn’t speeding.

“Well Ms. King,” he politely said.  “The reason I pulled you over was that you have a tail light out.”

SHEW…HUGE SIGH OF RELIEF and a great big “Thank you Jesus” fell over me!

I knew that was His little reminder to me and one FREE pass to NEVER text again!

So as the Officer left my window, my father sarcastically says as loud as he can, “so it wasn’t because you were texting!”

LOL  What a brat!

Anyway, I really have not done it in the past until that day but one time is enough to cause the loss of lives.

I have watched many celebrities join Oprah’s cause of “NO TEXTING AND DRIVING” and in my own little way, I have joined them all too!

I’m guilty and I’ll admit it…but I will pledge not to text and drive from now on (which is very tempting now that I have a NEW Blackberry)…

Will you join me in taking the pledge?

Just wanted to pass along a few books that I am or will be reading over the next month or so.

I am about 1/2 way through this short but thought provoking book.  Dr. Henry Cloud has a unique way of looking at things and the chapter on “Hate” really had my mind bending at first but then really helped me through a few things I had been struggling with.

The next book is by Rich Marshall called, “God@Work.” If you have wondered how your Faith plays a role in your business and how business plays part in your Faith, this book might be for you.

It’s been on my To Read list for several years.  I actually bought it once and lent it to one of my business partners back then and I think she must have loved it so much that I never saw it again ;)

This book was initially brought to my attention by my Mentor. It had a huge impact on her outlook towards the purpose she had been called to.

Lastly, I am reading Laurie Beth Jones, The Four Elements of Success:  A Simple Personality Profile that will Transform Your Team.

One of my all time favorite books on leadership, is by this author, “Teach Your Team to Fish.”

This book was suggested to me by one of my peers in the home business industry that I have high regards for, Sue Seward.

We both have studied the “gems” that Dani Johnson teaches and Sue got me excited about this book to take it a step farther.

I know that learning the personalities and languages of my team members and even my family and friends has helped me so much better communicate with them and respect just how they are “wired” and not try to change them but just adjust how I speak and react to them.

Happy Reading!

P.S.  I would love to hear what’s on your Summer Reading List in the “COMMENTS!”

As of today, Facebook has made another change to its Fan Pages.

Instead of becoming a “Fan” of a particular Page, now you will “Like” the page instead.

TO:

Here’s their reasoning in the change (from FaceBook):

Why did “Become a Fan” change to “Like”?
To improve your experience and promote consistency across the site, we’ve changed the language for Pages from “Fan” to “Like.” We believe this change offers you a more light-weight and standard way to connect with people, things and topics in which you are interested.

When you click “Like” on a Page, you are making a connection to that Page. The Page will be displayed in your profile, and in turn, you will be displayed on the Page as a person who likes that Page. The Page will also be able to post content into your News Feed.

Apparently, they felt that more people would join a Page if they didn’t have to become a so-called “Fan” and instead just “like” something.

I guess they wanted to eliminate any pressure Page creators had in getting “Fans” to their page.

hmmm….were others feeling pressure regarding becoming a FAN or getting FANs?

It made me look up the meaning of “Fan:”

In this context:

a person enthusiastic about a specified sport, pastime, or performer; devotee a baseball fan, movie fan

So I guess a Fan would be someone who is just enthusiastic about a person or topic on FaceBook.  Is this really that different than to “LIKE” a Page?

Personally I liked becoming a “Fan” of other pages and I didn’t take it all too seriously and felt pressure that if someone were to see I was a “Fan” of something that meant I was some crazy “groupie.”

I’m not sure whether it will make a difference or not or if its a good or bad thing but one thing I have come to realize with FaceBook is that you have to just roll with the changes.

There’s a whole debate about it already in the Help Section.  LOL

Whether you “LIKE” it or not…it’s probably here to stay (and in another month, everyone will forget we were even called “Fans” of pages anyway)

P.S.   Let me know if you “LIKE” this or not!!!  ;)

Last week, Stew and I took the boys spontaneously to Vegas to check out the Montelago Village Resort, outside of Las Vegas. It’s located at Lake Las Vegas. Stew had been looking at Las Vegas realty on the Internet for several months now as their economy has really taken a huge hit. He stumbled across this resort and it looked pretty cool so last week when a snow storm hit us in April…we just said enough is enough and let’s go find some SUN (as I’m typing this, there is a couple of fresh new snow in my front yard right now)! WTHeck?

Anyway, this resort is amazing and beautiful and so well maintained but there is a little bit of a creepy isolated feeling there as it is virtually a “ghost town!” It’s so sad.

The Resort is located right on the lake and next to several other major resorts such as Ritz Carlton and Loew’s. Winding through the community is a beautiful golf course– with lots of trails and nature to see.

The outdoor pool and hot tub(s) are perfect with a beautiful view of the lake and a fireplace that was on at night for a great atmosphere. It has a small outdoor area full of shops and restaurants (1/2 are shut down) and on the weekends, apparently they are trying to drive back business here with concerts on the lake (we left before the weekend).

The rooms were awesome! We stayed in a 1 bedroom condo unit with a sweet kitchenette and a large balcony overlooking the lake.

The staff was so good and attentive and the property was so clean….you would never know this property was struggling because its so well maintained — other than the lack of people there.

We really enjoyed it as it’s about 15 minutes from The Strip and so for families, its a nice option if you want to play in Vegas but not have your young family downtown Vegas. There’s plenty of shopping and restaurants about 5 minutes away from the Resort community.

We had a blast here and because of the economy, they had some “smoking” good deals on our room!

If you want a get away with the family but have stayed away from Vegas because of the crowds and environment and high prices, this Resort just might be for you!
